Why A Deep Clean Before Selling Saves Time Later

By tackling dirt, clutter, and neglected areas now—especially before the holiday season—you’ll save time later, create a more inviting space for potential buyers, and set the stage for effective home staging. Whether it’s scrubbing floors, polishing surfaces, or clearing out closets, a thorough pre-sale cleaning gives your home the fresh, move-in-ready look that buyers notice and appreciate.

The unedited podcast transcript can be found below

do you want your home to sell faster this spring
start with a pre holiday deep clean
now I know you got a lot of tasks on your hands
but these specific tasks
will help boost your home’s appeal
get you a higher price and sell faster
so let’s dive in to this episode
because in the next few minutes
I’m gonna show you what wins
that will make the biggest impact on your house
hello there everybody
welcome my name is Kasha
I’m an occupied home stager
and in this episode
we are talking about pre holiday deep cleaning
that makes your spring sale faster
now I know I’ve talked about this in the last video
a 90 day prep schedule
of getting you working and towards your home
to get that house ready for the spring sale
but this one is specific tasks
I have 10 tasks that I want to cover with you
that while your holiday stuff is up
and showing off the house and everything
and you’re enjoying
enjoying the last of your holiday decor and everything
in this specific home
now is the time to do some other things
that you can get your hands on
and will really help the sale of your home later on
okay
let’s talk about 10 things
the first one
I already talked about this in the last video
we’re talking about deep cleaning the oven
stove and microwave
those we’ve covered in the kitchen in the last video
if you haven’t watched that video
take a look at that video
um it was preparing your house to sell the 90 day plan
okay that way
it gets you through December
January and February
all right if you’re in the holiday season
you’ve already hopefully put up your holiday decor
you’re getting ready for guests
maybe you’re just cooking for yourself
whatever the plan may be
make sure the kitchen is spotless
okay so that’s number one
number two let’s work on the bathroom
okay so
we need to look at the bathroom
and deep clean those showers right
the tiles the floors
the toilets everything
all everything needs to be scrubbed down
um and get that tile looking
it’s great greatest right
you don’t want if you don’t have tile on the walls
maybe you have like
an insert type of thing all those types of stains
wash out that tub wash out that shower
make it look sparkling clean
that is really important
because buyers will notice any grime or mold
or anything like that if there is something like that
you need to remediate now and get that taken care of
maybe you need to um
remove some of the caulking and
you know spray the mold stuff or whatever
and then re caulk it okay
so there may be a couple extra steps in there
but if your tub is just not looking as great
maybe the shower doors need some extra help
I know those glass showers can be really difficult
to get those hard water stains off
now is the time to deep clean
and get that taken care of
vinegar is a great way to help with that
um to get the glass looking its best
okay
number three get your carpets steam cleaned
you’re probably gonna have to do this later anyway
um before you move out
to look its best right
so do it now get them done now
if there’s carpets in the bedrooms that are just
not looking the greatest
maybe the stairs need some help
I know we had stairs in our colonial home in Virginia
um and that one had carpet on the stairs
ever since then I haven’t had carpet on my stairs
as they’ve been wooden stairs
so it’s a whole lot easier to take
clean and take care of those
but that carpet man
it can see the traffic patterns
you know what I mean right
so if that’s something that needs to be taken care of
I know we had that we had a carpet cleaner come in
and take care of our stairs
and we all unfortunately
had carpet in our dining room
ugh gross yuck
just we never ripped it out
of all the other renovation that we did in the house
we never got to that carpet
to just replace it with wood
uh but what we did end up doing is
we did get that carpet cleaned
cause it was a really nice
thick carpet and then
we had the carpet cleaner add some Scotchgard
on the carpet on the stairs and in the dining room
the high traffic areas um
and that helped preserve you know
keeping it clean for a lot longer
right so
now’s the time to get that carpet cleaner in there
and do that get
sometimes I even I even had them do
the last time we moved out of our house
I even had them steam clean our couches too
because over time the couches
ours are upholstered they’re not leather
so the upholstery kind of gets looking kind of dingy
um I even had them clean my daughter’s headboard
because it was one of those upholstered
kind of headboards you know
um and it looked so much better
it’s amazing
the things that these steam cleaning guys can do
so steam cleaning your carpets
maybe some upholstery while you’re at it
because if you’re taking that furniture with you
then it’s gonna look fresh and clean
and great for your next house
uh number four is washing out the garbage can
the kitchen one yeah
that one you’re probably going
oh yeah
I know I have to do that every couple of months
it seems like it’s just
food and gunk and stuff gets down there
and it’s just ugh
I’d rather prefer to do it in the summertime
cause then I’m outside
I’m just hosing it off in the wintertime
it’s a lot harder to do that
cause it is so cold
maybe there’s some snow and ice on the ground
that you’re not so good you know
having a great you know
weather day
but if you can get those garbage cans washed out
not just the kitchen
sometimes even the bathroom ones get kind of gunky
but you know just
especially those kinds of cans
you’re gonna be moving with those
you don’t want them to be all gunkyfied
I know it’s not a real word
but I’m using it anyway
so when it comes to your garbage cans
wash those out real quick
when you’re waiting for the dishes
maybe the kids are doing the dishes
you go take care of the garbage cans
uh number five
the curtains if you have any
have been washed or have been taken down
cause maybe they’re not the kind that you want anyway
um
maybe they just need to be replaced with something else
I know I’ve had some I have curtains in our house
sometimes we have blinds in other rooms
if you don’t have curtains
and maybe the blinds need to be dusted
but if you have old drapes
like the heavy kind those are the times
when it comes down to staging your house
is when I recommend just taking down the heavy drapes
they’re just too heavy dark
they kind of make the room feel like really heavy
I guess that’s the word I’m looking for
but you know what I mean
so you want to make sure that if you do have curtains
make them look nice and fresh
they probably haven’t been washed
ever since you put them up right
it’s probably been a few years
yeah yeah
but now is the time also
if you are interested
I also have a free guide called The
How to Start Staging your house now
and in there I have tips on what you can do
to get started on staging your house
some home improvements you can work on um
along with coming up with a timeline yourself
to get your house ready to sell
this is a free guide called
how to start staging your house now
I’ll leave the link in the show notes below
okay No. 6
six wash pillows like
throw pillows throw blankets
if you have them um
any of those kinds of things
because they probably haven’t been touched in a while
and they may not be looking
its best use those ones that
you know you’ve looked around going oh
I’m gonna use these to stage the house
maybe you’ve pulled them out
and they’re just not smelling the greatest
maybe refresh them kind of in the dryer maybe right
um so
now’s a great time to pull those types of things out
and have them getting ready
so that when it comes time to stage your house
you have all these things cleaned and washed
and ready to go
No. 7 I already talked about dusting blinds
but if you um
have ceiling fans
now’s the time to dust those ceiling fans
it probably coated with some
you know with some dust up there
probably get one of those little brushes
you know what I mean um
I had one that’s way up high
and I don’t get up there Alex
except maybe once a year maybe once every two years
yeah yeah
I know it’s bad because it’s way up high
I need one of those big
huge wands to get up there with the brush
um to dust it off
so dust off those ceiling fans
dust those blinds it’ll help
I promise you
to get your house looking great for the home sellers
home buyers sorry
as you as the home seller
No.8 is baseboards cabinets
and windows I’m gonna kind of group those all in one
because those are in basically almost every room
baseboards are in every room
um windows
if you can get a window cleaner
hopefully
you’re the kind to have the windows that kind of
flip open that you can easily get to on the inside
without having to wash them on the outside
uh but those are great
especially if you have screens
and the screens have gotten
dirt and grime on them over the years
those windows you really need to make sure they’re
they’re clean so that they let the light in
so when you open up the curtains
you can see through the windows
is not speckled dirt on those windows
so that’s No. 8 are the baseboards
windows and cabinets
meaning like the top of the cabinets
maybe the fronts of the cabinets um
and especially in the kitchen
cause they tend to get some grease build up
okay
let me see I don’t know what number I’m on
but basically flip and rotate mattresses
maybe you haven’t done that in a while
now’s the time um
to get that just air it out right
flip those around turn it around
maybe those are the kind that still do that um
depending on your mattress right
maybe you have a different kind
but if you do need to do that
this is a good reminder to do that real quick
on all the beds in your house
I already mentioned cabinets
dust the top of the cabinets
if you have cabinets
that don’t go up to the top of the ceiling
like in the kitchen and they have like a
a shelf up there
now’s the time to kind of clear that off
especially if you have bookcases
maybe in the living room
maybe in an office or something like that
dusting the top of that in the shelves especially um
dusting all that will help you also
for the spring sale later
and then finally organizing your cabinets
so what do I mean by that
is in whether it’s in the kitchen
whether it’s in the bathroom
maybe it’s a linen closet
um organize the
the shelves the things that are on the shelf
do you really need all those cleaners on there right
um maybe you’ve gone through some bottles and realize
oh that’s not working
what I that’s not what I want doesn’t
I don’t that’s not what I use all the time
um maybe it’s the kitchen cabinets
with dishes and platters that you don’t use anymore
now the time to go through those things and decide
are these coming with me to the next house
are they not if they’re not
then donate them sell them
whatever it is that you need to do
to get them out of the house
and help show the house
because you don’t want the cabinets
overflowing with items in there
because then it just shows
that there’s not enough storage in the house
and it’s basically
you’re just storing it because you had it
and then you thought you would use it
but you never did yeah
it’s part of the decluttering process
I know it’s hard every time
and it’s funny
because even though we move every two or three years
I still find things that I’ve
you know shoved in the back of the cabinet
thinking I would need it and then I realize oh
I never used that
the whole entire time we were in this house
that really means that you don’t need it
uh huh
I’m here to tell you that I know
so hopefully
this gives you a good appreciation of what you can do
right now before the holidays
as you’re looking around and prepping
and I know you’re checking your lists of okay
I need to buy these things
maybe it’s time to go through
as you’re you know
getting the dishes done
maybe you’re waiting for something to bake in the oven
you’ve already you know
clean out that garbage can
dust those blinds take down those curtains
whatever it may be and if you do need extra help
maybe you want more a step by step
guidance of what to do in each and every single room
I do offer an online home staging course called
Home Staging Basics
I’ll leave the link in the show notes
but I go room by room and tell you exactly how to stage
the living room the dining room
the kitchen the bedroom
the kids bedrooms the bathrooms
the foyer the curb appeal
the garage the mudroom
all the rooms in the house
bonus room rooms
whether you have an office or workout room or playroom
all of those rooms are included in this online course
and it’s self paced
you can watch as many as you want all at once
I talk about colors I talk about accessories
which ones you should have
which ones you shouldn’t if you’re decluttering
that’s the main thing that you should focus on
first thing
to get done and then work on the rest of the rooms
but it goes step by step in this online course
and it is on there for you but
and just because you’re listening to this podcast
you got $10 off
there’s a link in the show notes as well
so as an appreciation for watching my videos
so hopefully this deep cleaning
pre holiday deep cleaning video
is something that helps you get started
to get your house ready for the spring
and get you ready so that when it comes time to list it
it’s all ready to go right great
okay I hope you guys have a fantastic week
and we’ll talk to you later bye
