Lighten up your outdoor space
As the weather warms up, many people start to come out from hibernation and spend more time outdoors. As you start planning your end of school parties, BBQs and such, take a look at your lighting outside your home. Lighting can set the mood but also help with safety issues around the home.
Path lights – Some of these pathlights can be easily installed if they are 
solar powered ones. They light the path to your front door or a path around the side of your home. Some may require hardwiring to a power source while other ones may not. Be sure to find the right one for your level of expertise.
Deck lights – If you have a deck and some stairs, Fairfax County code requires a light near each step. They are small lights to light up the steps and keep you and your guests safe.
Porch lights – This is another safety light but you don’t have to swap safety for design. There are many stylish designs out there to choose from. It really depends on how much you can afford.
Lanterns – Hanging lanterns can also bring in some bling to an otherwise plain area. There are lots of colors and shapes to choose from. Some are on strands of lights or are just simply hung from a hook like this one I found at World Market.
Battery operated candles – This flameless option is great if you have little kids to worry about or windy weather. Use them in chandeliers, lanterns or just on the table under a hurricane lamp.
Ceiling fan and light – This is a great option if you have a deck that needs some additional light. Serve dinner outdoors under this light and you can party late into the night.
Fireplace or firepit – Nothing says summer like a fire pit ready to take on some smores. Many elaborate designs feature a pizza oven but you don’t have to go that far. A simple fire pit can be bought at your local big box store.
